Ribbon Cutting for Supportive Apartments
Mount Airy, NC - The Arc of Surry County and The Arc of North Carolina are proud to announce the opening of a new collaborative housing project for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A ribbon cutting will be held on November 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at 119 Churchill Lane, Mt. Airy, North Carolina. Mayor Deborah Cochran, along with other local, state and county officials are scheduled to attend.
The Arc of North Carolina was awarded grants from the NC Housing Finance Agency, the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments and Crossroads Behavioral Healthcare to construct two duplexes to provide inclusive, affordable housing for people with disabilities. The duplexes are located within a residential neighborhood and are conveniently located close to shopping, employment and recreational opportunities.
Tenants will hold a lease to their unit and pay rent based on their income. They will also have access to individualized supportive services through area agencies and specialized technology from the SimplyHome System built into the duplexes.
There are already several group homes in Surry County; however, these duplexes will be the first project of its kind to serve people with disabilities who want to live in more independent housing with supportive services based on their individualized needs.
The Arc of North Carolina extends its thanks to the many state and local partners who have made this project possible. Dave Richard, Executive Director of The Arc of North Carolina, states “This project is an excellent example of a collaborative project that incorporates non-profit organizations, state and local funding and the best practice principle to support people with disabilities in the most inclusive of settings; their own home in their choice of community.”
Applications to live in the apartments are currently being accepted. For more information on the apartments or to request an application, please call Rebecca or Brent at 704-883-8084 or toll-free at 888-425-2938.
