Enabling technology can help an individual with a disability live independently. Living independently doesn’t necessarily mean living alone. It can mean making choices for yourself, such as choosing your own meals, going to bed by yourself, getting ready for work on your own, and taking medications with reminders.
When deciding if technology is the right fit for an individual, it is imperative to involve the self-advocate in the process to ensure they want to use technology to support their goals for independence.
Historically individuals with disabilities were denied many basic human rights and liberties which is why self-determination is so important. Self-determination is a basic human right and means that an individual can make choices, set goals, self-advocate for their preferences and desires, and exercise control over their lives. Self-determination allows for the dignity of risk. Self-determination includes supported decision-making.

Have preliminary conversations with the individuals to determine their level of comfort with technology and their desire to use it.
It is also best practice to use an evaluation tool to determine if technology is the least invasive support option and can lead to greater independence and dignity of risk.
